When the urge to binge feels strong: a gentle way to create a pause

There are moments when the urge can feel almost immediate.

You might not even notice how you got there. One minute you’re doing something else, and the next you’re standing in the kitchen, or scrolling, or thinking about food in a way that feels hard to ignore.

It can feel like something has already started. Like you’re already too far into it to stop.

In those moments, the instinct is often to react quickly. To either give in, or try to shut it down completely.

But both can feel overwhelming, so instead of trying to stop anything, what if the focus shifted slightly? Not to stop, or control, but to create a small pause.

A pause doesn’t need to be big. It doesn’t need to change everything. It’s simply a moment where something softens.

That might look like:

Taking one slow breath.

Putting a small gap between you and the urge.

Noticing what you’re feeling, even quietly to yourself.

Or softening the way you’re speaking to yourself in that moment.

Nothing here is about doing it perfectly. And it doesn’t mean the urge will disappear. But something subtle can begin to change. Because when there is even a small amount of space, there is also a little more choice, and that choice doesn’t have to be dramatic, it might just be:

Slowing things down.

Staying with yourself for a moment longer,

Or deciding not to rush

These moments are easy to overlook as they can feel too small to matter.

But they DO matter.

Because change doesn’t usually happen in one big decision, it happens in moments like this. Quiet, often unnoticed shifts that begin to build over time.

So if you find yourself in one of those moments today, see if you can gently create just a little space.

Not to get it right.

But simply to be with yourself in a slightly different way.
