Why food feels like the only thing that works
There can be a point where food doesn’t just feel like something you enjoy. It feels like the only thing that works, the one thing you can rely on. The one thing that will shift how you feel, even if only for a moment. And when that’s the case, it can feel confusing when people suggest doing something else, because other things don’t seem to reach in the same way.
I remember feeling this very clearly. There were moments where I knew I wasn’t physically hungry, but the pull towards food was strong. Not because I wanted food itself, but because I wanted what it gave me.
A sense of comfort. A shift in how I was feeling. Something that felt reliable when everything else felt uncertain.
This isn’t a weakness. It’s your nervous system doing what it has learned to do. Food is one of the quickest ways to create a change in how we feel. It can soothe, distract, stimulate or numb.
And when something works consistently, your brain begins to rely on it. Over time, it can start to feel like the only option.
When people suggest alternatives, it can feel frustrating, because things like going for a walk, calling a friend, or distracting yourself don’t always create the same immediate shift. And moments where your system is already overwhelmed or depleted, those options can feel harder to reach for.
So it makes sense that food feels easier.
More accessible.
More reliable.
What began to change things for me wasn’t trying to replace food completely, it was slowly building awareness around what I was acutually needing in those moments
Sometimes it was comfort, sometimes it was rest.
Sometimes it was simply a way of escaping how I was feeling. And rather than taking food away, I began to create small moments of pause.
Not to stop the urge. But to understand it.
If food feels like the only thing that works, it doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It often means your system has found something that helps. And that’s not something to fight, but something to gently understand. Because from understanding, other possibilities can begin to open up.
Slowly.
And in a way that feels more manageable.
