Why giving yourself permission can interrupt the binge cycle

For many people, the urge to binge feels like something that needs to be controlled.

The instinct is often to say:

Don’t do it.

Be stronger.

You need more willpower.

But for many, the more they try to fight the urge, the stronger it seems to become.

The pressure of restriction

When we tell ourselves we are not allowed to eat certain foods, or that we must resit an urge, it can create a sense of internal pressure. Part of the mind begins to focus even more on the thing it is trying to avoid. This can make food feel more powerful, more tempting, and more difficult to ignore.

A different approach

Some people notice a shift when they try something different. Instead of immediately resisting the urge, they allow a small moment of permission.

I can eat if I want to…but I’m just going to pause for a moment first.

This isn’t about giving up or losing control.

It’s about creating space.

Why permission works

When we give ourselves permission, the pressure begins to ease. The nervous system softens slightly, and the urgency of the moment can reduce. For the first time, ther may be a pause between the urge and the action.

Sometimes the person still chooses to eat. Sometimes they don’t. But the feeling of being completely controlled by the urge begins to change.

The beginning of choice

Permission does not mean the behaviour disappears overnight. But it can be the beginning of something important.

A moment of awareness, a moment of space.

A moment where choice becomes possible again.

And often, that small shift is where change begins.
