An effective way to respond when you feel anxious and the urge to binge eat feels strong
When the urge to binge feels strong, it can be difficult to know what to do.
In those moments, everything can feel quite immediate. Like something is already in motion, and trying to stop it completlely can feel overwhelming.
What helped me was not trying to control the urge, but responding to it in a slightly different way.
Not perfectly.
Just gently.
Here are a few small things you might try in that moment.
Pause, even briefly
This doesn’t have to be a long pause. Sometimes just a few seconds is enough. Standing still. Taking a breath.
Creating even the smallest space between the feeling and the action.
Notice what’s going on in your body
You might feel restless, tense or a strong pull towards food. There’s no need to change it.
Just noticing it can begin to bring a little more awareness into the moment.
Ask yourself, “what do I need right now?”
The answer might not always be clear.
It might be comfort.
Reset.
Connection.
Or simply a way of shifting how you feel.
This isn’t about finding the perfect answer, just opening up the question.
Soften the pressure
If your mind is telling you to “be good” or to “stop completely,” notice the pressure in that.
You don’t have to get this exactly right. You don’t have to fix everything in this moment.
Let whatever happens next be okay
Sometimes you will still go on to eat.
And that doesn’t mean the pause didn’t matter. Something has already shifted. There is more awareness than before. And that is part of the process.
Over time, these small moments begin to build. Not in a dramatic way, but in a way that feels more manageable. More steady.
If the urge feels strong, you don’t have to fight it. And you don’t have to rush into it either.
There is space in between.
And learning to find the space, even briefly, can begin to change things.
